Instead, we were the ones taken unawares, despite our carefulness." Hawkeye half-smiled ruefully. "Oakenlings are unmatched in the forest. And we simply do not go to human settlements. However, in the land that is betwixt and between, grasslands or savanna, brush or hedgerows... we are subject to making mistakes."

"It was a mysterious message, and we were understandably extremely cautious. To this day, I do not know the true source of that contact; I have had no time to investigate it, you see. Perhaps the whole thing was an elaborate lure. Yet, the references given were impeccable," the man shrugged. "It matters not.
