"I'm glad that won't be an issue between us," Nahira remarks a bit wryly. "Yes," and the mercurial girl smiles, then abruptly sobers, "We do have one major problem, though. We'll have to do something about your look." Fand smiles again. "This should be fun. Do you like to shop?" "No," Nahira replies with brutal honesty. "What's wrong with how I look?" "Well, I don't want to offend you," ventures Lady Fand, "but you look like a guard." "I am a guard." "Yes, but I don't want that known."

Upon being introduced to Fand and Istau the panther, Nahira politely offers the hilt of her sword to the Lady, and her open hand to the cat. It appears that both are deemed acceptable, and she is approved for duty. "How old are you?" Lady Fand asks impertinently. "I beg your pardon, but that's not relevant information. Old enough," answers Nahira. "Good, I hate people who try to cozy up to me like they know me so well, just because they were teenagers themselves not so long ago," Fand says.

At first glance, the teenager does not look like someone who would need assistance in a fair fight; she is fit and strong, reputed to be handy with knives, and has a large black panther as a pet/companion. However, in Nahira's experience, the only fights which are ever fair are duels, and if the girl is foolish enough to challenge someone to the death, Nahira will wash her hands of taking responsibility for the wealthy teen. That, too, is clearly stated in her contract, and Fand has agreed.
