Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (Nov. 1887 – March 1986) was an American artist. She is best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism". By age ten she had decided to become an artist, and she and her sister received art instruction from local watercolorist Sara Mann. Her breakthrough came in 1916 when Anita Pollitzer showed Alfred Stieglitz of the 291 gallery her charcoal drawings. He loved them so much he decided to show them. (continued in comments) |
