It was, at the very least, a case of enlightened self-interest. Helping me would help him. He managed to persuade me that what I needed to do, in order to inspire Thea's admiration, was to retrieve the crystal, the thing she obviously most desired, for her myself. In order to do that, though, I would have to be a genie; there was simply no way that a mortal could manhandle an immense stone up the rock shaft and out through the tiny crack at the bottom of the ravine. And the crystal was huge.

As I followed the passage, and grew farther and farther away from Thea and the memory of her strange, ice-borne voice, much less her face, I began to listen more and more to the male ifrit. He was extremely careful never to suggest that I disobey her authority over me; instead he bent and flexed my artificial devotion into a shape that met his goals instead. He said he would like to help me. And I knew it for the truth because captive fey cannot lie, although they can overstate such matters.

Happily for me, the male ifrit was not under the hulder's spell and could think perfectly well for himself. Apparently he didn't relish having his diamond interred under tons of rock in the middle of a desert for some approximation of eternity; the odds were pathetically slim that it would ever be discovered again, much less that some kindly soul would wish him free. The genie of the ring, therefore, redoubled his efforts to trick me. It wasn't hard. I was naive and gullible in those days.

Probably you ladies see the flaw in her plan, as far as my wellbeing was concerned at least, immediately. However, I was just befuddled enough not to connect "touch nothing" with "have the genie bring me the crystal" and realize that as soon as the stone or best fragment thereof was removed, the balance would be upset and the ruins would not stay intact for long. She was setting me up to be buried alive. Or possibly crushed to death first, but definitely buried. So much for sharing treasure.

You have until sunrise to find and inspect the main energy source crystal, and if it is broken, select the most powerful remaining shard. Then command the djinn to convey it to the top of the ravine where I await you."
