Furthermore, the ifrit claimed that it didn't seem right to him that his Master should be an ordinary hireling. With his help, I could favorably impress this lady, who, upon perceiving my vast worthiness, would certainly be disposed to fall in love with me. Or, he added, as though considering the problem, at least she would view my suit in a more positive light. I protested that I had no aspirations to Thea's exalted hand in marriage, but these objections sounded hollow even to my own ears.

And, not having been forbidden to do so, I was thrilled to relate the many virtues of Thea, my icon. Perhaps she thought my brain was too numb to do anything but blindly follow instructions; however, I was not enthralled to quite that level. The ifrit was all sympathy, and said he totally understood my desire to cater to such a lady, yet surely she would value initiative as well as obedience. When he phrased it that way, it seemed very logical to me, but then, I was in a suggestible state.

"How may I serve you... young Master?" he asked, again not very humbly. "I'm not sure yet," I said truthfully. "The lady whom I serve will now send me more directions." At that the ifrit pricked up his already pointed ears. "A lady commands you, young Master? May I know her identity?" Somehow he managed to fold himself into a sitting position before me, and look very confiding. Normally I would have thought his expression dangerously tricky, but it was difficult to tell with the tusks.

Almost immediately, though, he saw that it was me who had summoned him, and the giant blue djinn settled down, at least to all external appearances. "Who the..." well, he swore a lot... "are you?" he demanded in his booming voice. From somewhere I found a reserve of courage, or obstinacy, and answered, "I am Amen, your Master! Who are you?" "I... am the genie of the ring. That is all I am required to tell you... young Master." He glared viciously at the space above my head, but not at me.

If you have never seen a male ifrit in a colossal rage, I strongly suggest that you continue to avoid the experience! He was dark blue, with flashing red eyes, and he was enormous! That alone was intimidating enough without adding the fangs and tusks! The cavern seemed to be completely filled by him, and although the chamber was not wide, it was very tall. In actuality, this male ifrit was probably only about nine or ten feet tall; I've heard that some are as much as twelve, if less bulky.
