As it happened, it wouldn't really have mattered had I stayed with them or not, the results would have been the same. All I did was hasten the process of my own... downfall... a bit. Someone was looking for me, and, not being detained by my shepherd's ability to walk through a flock without upsetting it or causing the sheep to mill aimlessly, that individual found me almost immediately after I pulled that little stunt. She was, quite simply, the most beautiful creature I'd ever laid eyes on.

I don't know exactly what age I was then, my brother not being assiduous about remembering birthdays, but I guess that I was probably 15 or 16. 'Old enough to know better,' as they say, 'but not old enough to do better.' One of the things the men of the caravan had taught me was how to fight, and I foolishly decided that I would never know if I was any good as long as I remained well protected. Therefore, I excused myself to my comrades, and proceeded to lose them cutting between sheep herds.

Accordingly, one market day, I simply kept on walking to where the caravans were forming, and, choosing a trail master who was reputed to be fair, I explained my ability and how I might be useful to him if hired. I was hired. Instantly. We made three or four trips across the vast desert in record time, arriving earlier than his competitors, and I gained a slight reputation. But the trail master kept me from being waylaid and beaten to put me out of commission, and I was learning new skills.

As some people do, I possessed one magical talent: I could produce water, conjure it from the air, even in the driest conditions. Therefore, my flocks could graze on the abundant sweet grasses left waving and abandoned when the seasonal waterholes dried up too much for other shepherds to use. My sheep prospered, and fetched a better price in the marketplace, but it occurred to me that, as good as my gift was for a shepherd, it would be many times more valuable to caravans crossing the desert.
