It is a subtle thing, of course, and had she not been straining every sense to the limit it would probably have escaped her notice just as it was intended to do. During the banquet feast after the ceremony itself but before the night's entertainment began, Star Hawk Burning... hesitated slightly while cutting his meat, and nearly sliced his finger open. "That is NOT his knife," thought Smoke Cat. "HIS knife is like a part of him by now. A confusion surrounds this one, for the moment."

Smoke Cat Watching is a powerful young Shaman, but she lacks experience in curses of such a high level of force; this smacks of demon mischief, of one who has traded bits of humanity for influence over others. She is not sure who to trust, even within Sun Horse Clan, yet Rolling Thunder is at risk also. Specifically Grey Owl is in danger, for it is a death spell cast over the pair. "What shall I do?" she asks the smoke cat, which is herself. "Watch! And watch closely!" is her answer.
