For @NightOwl's Historical Lady of that Name contest. Lili Elbe (1882 - 1931) was a Danish transgender woman, and one of the first people in recorded history to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Born under the name "Einar Wegener", Elbe was married to a woman named Gerda Gottlieb, and the two worked as painters (Gottlieb painting portraits for books and magazines, and Elbe specializing in landscape paintings). Lili's transition first began when Gerda entreated her to fill in for an absentee model in one of her portraits, putting on stockings and heels so her legs could substitute those of the model. She discovered that she felt very comfortable in women's clothing, and afterwards, regularly presented as a female. Gottlieb introduced Lili to others as Einar's sister. A friend of the couple, Anna Larssen, is quoted as saying, "You know, {Einar}, you were certainly a girl in a former existence, or else nature has made a mistake with you this time." (Continued) |
