I looked at my mother's hands and felt such appreciation. They seemed to not only work tirelessly but lovingly. They were tender and they tough. Tenderly touching my face when tears rolled or I needed consolation. Tough when scrubbing pans when she cooked macaroni and cheese. Hands that were creative enough to see and practical enough to plant in the garden. Those hands could strike up a tune on the piano and stir waffle batter. I smiled as she lay there sleeping but not for long for those hands would back at ironing washing cleaning cooking as soon as the alarm went off. The greatest work was accomplished when those hands came together when she knelt for prayer. |
