| Maria Theresa of Spain was born on the 10th September 1638 to King Philip of Spain and Elisabeth of France who died when Maria was six years old. In 1658 the war between Spain and France began to wind down and a union was held between the two royal families and in 1660 King Louis XIV of France and Princess Maria Theresa of Spain, making her Queen of France. Together they had three children, Louis, The Dauphin of France, Princess Maria-Theresa and Prince Philippe -Charles. Louis was faithful to his wife for the first year of their marriage, however he soon found comfort with a string of mistresses, many of them bearing him children. Louis left his wife to her own devices and spent his time with his favourite mistress, Madame de Montespan, yet he reprimanded her when her behaviour insulted the Queen in public. During the last weeks of 1683 Maria fell ill, and on the 30th July 1683 she died a painful death at the Palace of Versailles, aged 44. (For @NightOwl's contest) |
