| Hannah Chaplin was the mother of the great slapstick actor Sir Charlie Chaplin. She was born Hannah Harriet Pedlingham Hill 1865 - 1928. She became a Music Hall entertainer and used the stage name Lily Harley. She had three sons: Sydney Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin and George Chaplin. She had an affair which led to her separating from the boys father shortly after George was born. She became mentally ill and had a breakdown in 1895, from May 1903 to September 1912 she was in the Cane Hill Lunatic asylum in Surrey. Her son Charlie wrote about a visit to see her in 1912 stating that she had been place in a padded cell and that she was given shock treatment with icy showers, she was quite blue, Charlie and Sydney decided to place her in a private hospital. After a while they couldn't afford the private asylum and she put back into the Cane Hill asylum. Later the Chaplin brothers took her to California where she was cared for until she died.
