What Brin was happiest about that evening, though, was that apparently Isthare no longer felt awkward carrying out the role of her bridal attendant. Marea had been all right from the beginning, aside from a tiny sliver of weirdness that her formerly solitary mother was getting remarried, yet Isthare had been very conscious of being "found family" and "newly found" at that, not to mention from being from the wrong branch of the Craft. Now, however, the dark Witch was more at ease, and herself.

Isthare was pleased. Her dark Witch friends had been accepted remarkably well by their Candeliana sisters, and she'd been able to relax and enjoy the dancing herself. During her meditation, her thoughts were mainly of her own recent marriage, of course, and impending motherhood. Typically, a Witch could tell if she was having a girl because her powers were boosted, yet became erratic. This was indeed the case with Isthare, but then her child was half-Fae, so a boy could produce the same results.

The bridesmaids joined brides in this ritual for counsel, for companionship, and to keep each other from falling asleep before the specified hour, usually the deepest part of the night, around 3 am. Some variants ended at midnight, while others lasted until dawn, but it was commonly conceded that the bride should get some sleep so she didn't drag through the next day like a zombie. Accordingly, the following day's events often began around noon, since the bridesmaids also wanted to sleep late.

It was a bit akin to a squire holding vigil on the eve of his knighthood, and for some of the same reasons. This was a life-changing commitment, to say the least, and regardless of one's partner's kind (although with a mortal was the briefest bond), likely to end in the heartbreak of widowhood for the Witch. Still, with an Oakenling, that would be far distant, and even when Brin had chosen her first, human husband... well, love is love, and one should not count days, but rather treasure joys.

A great deal of wisdom was sung, or chanted, which was a novel way of expressing themselves for the Witches, but to which they adapted quite readily. After all, a good, well-spoken spell should come from the heart, the same as sage advice. Brin, Marea, and Isthare danced and sang, too, but imbibed far less freely (Isthare not drinking any alcohol at all), since they would be sitting and meditating together far into the night after the general celebrations died down and everyone else went home.
