Because of the seriousness of the charges against her, at the beginning of the rite, the Mistress Supreme of the Union of Vengeance ceremonially broke Elora's staff. Her "relics" had already been confiscated and destroyed, and when appropriate, the remnants buried. She would never be free to leave Ankanas without authorized supervision again, and the title of High Mistress was no longer hers. No, it was only her life itself which Elora could gain from this treatment according to the Old Ways.

Every morning and evening, Elora would have an interview with her jury so that they could assess her progress, or lack thereof, without attempting to squash roughly 50 people into one confined space for the entire duration of the trial. Furthermore, on the third night, each individual Dark Sister who held Elora's fate in her hands was encouraged to converse in private for at least a while with the murderess and traitor. And, as previously settled, Isthare had been given the task of Timekeeper.

Since it would be impractical to hold a poll of each Dark Witch in the community, four dozen representatives had been chosen at random, and it was these 48 women that must be convinced, at the end of three days, that Elora had changed and given up her evil ways. Every single one had to agree; a simple majority was insufficient. The Mistress Supreme of Ankanas would tally the votes, although it was not necessarily anonymous. If a Witch chose to try to persuade the others, that was her right.

These ladies were to be given every measure of respect due to a High Mistress of the Union of Vengeance, although not as much as their own Mistress Supreme, obviously. As for the wrongdoer herself, Elora stood confessed as guilty of the murder of High Mistress Jaenell, and collusion with Yelaadim and rogue Damians. She had finally stopped crying hysterically, but was withdrawn almost to the point of catatonia, presumably crippled with remorse, though the cynical said it was all due to fear.
