Thanks a million, Leaf!! Yes, I figured that Marea learned her few basic sword fighting skills from her mother. Brin's overall temperament is gentle, but she doesn't have to be.

Meanwhile the second Damian was confronting a mostly defenseless woman, or so it seemed. He probably expected her to use magic, and low level spells at that, since the Witch was without staff or cauldron. Therefore, Brin did the unanticipated. She unsheathed the sword from the handbag and lunged, scoring a deep wound in the soldier's shoulder, rendering his left arm limp and nerveless. Her father had been Master-at-Arms of a castle in Denmark; Brin had grown up as a respectable shieldmaiden.

His sword ripped a tear in the Oakenling's protective rune-lined coat, but did no more damage than that, thanks to its enchantment. Swinging the staff wide, Hawkeye connected with the side of his enemy's head with a sharp crack, knocking him off balance. Spinning, he deflected the Damian's next blow, and swept the legs from beneath him. The soldier fell forward and beneath the train, not under the wheels, but between the tracks so that the rest of the entire train would have to pass over him.

The fugitives reached the walkway between cars at virtually the same moment that the last pair of Damians emerged from the compartment across from them. Hawkeye still had Brin's staff from pretending to be blind, and his sword was currently disguised by her enormous handbag; there was no opportunity to swap back again. In possession of a longer weapon, Hawkeye jabbed the butt of the staff into a Damian's throat. Unable to breathe, the soldier staggered forward a step, and attacked anyway.

Lightly, Brin laid a hand on her companion's shoulder. Instantly, he was awake and alert. "Damians," she related in a low voice. "At least two pair of them in the cars ahead of us, but they're in no hurry to catch us, so..." "We're cornered," Hawkeye finished for her. "More behind us." Rising, he moved toward the rear of the train. "We'll take a chance on the 'more of them' being fewer than the four you saw." Wordlessly assenting, the Witch was on her feet and right behind the Oakenling.
