Any remaining tension between Makto and Amen melts the first night that the former shepherd boy gets out his flute. Only Syeha is unsurprised at how sublimely he plays. She sits by his side, smiling, while the other young people and crew listen in wonder. The southern girl doesn't have quite as much time to spend alone with her boyfriend as she'd hoped, since there's always someone nearby on a ship, but one learns to adapt, and it becomes close enough for talking together if not for kissing.

It is assumed by her students that Miss, the Governess, must approve of the suavely courteous manners of Southern Cross, for she doesn't seem to be interested in learning about the Firebrand from other sources. In general, however, they're more attentive to novel experiences, like the sighting of dolphins, which Makto has only seen once or twice in the islands, and the three from the Central Kingdom have never even imagined. Maia is genuinely delighted to show her new friends the pod's antics.

And, amazingly enough, everything goes beautifully for the first several days of the voyage. The teens are busy getting to know one another, and having fun discovering similarities. White Rose takes her turn at deck swabbing, much to the astonishment of the others, who weren't aware that until recently, she'd been an ordinary girl. Miss does not feel the need to aid in the sailing of the ship. She does, however, ask Southern Cross many questions whenever he's free to enlighten her curiosity.

The teens nod their assent. Most of them have their mouths full, anyway. "If you wish to play games, you may do so. You will not involve my crew in your entertainments, nor will you involve yourselves in theirs. There will be no gambling. And lastly," here Shooting Star breaks down her stern facade and grins, "just behave yourselves, all right? If you don't, and I hear about it... and I will hear about it..., you'll wish I was only as strict as I seemed just a moment ago! That is final!"

"If you wish to attend classes, that you must clear with the Governess. In doing so, though, you will not inconvenience my crew. If you wish to work, you may do so; the two of you who have already been given chores may resume them without supervision. The other three of you may help out if assistance is desired. You will do exactly as you are told, no more, no less, and then inquire politely whether further help is wanted. Every crew member is more important than you are. Is that clear?"
