Going to a party where you will be stared at with disapproval is stressful enough with the support of friends or family. Syeha's friends, though, are the performers, so they cannot stand by her. Therefore, when the southern girl gets ready, she makes sure that every bead and feather is perfect, and then ceases to fret about how she looks. Once the music commences, she is lifted out of herself by its enchanting grace, anyway. But Amen isn't blind, and is aware of the strain on his girlfriend.

Mostly during the afternoons, Syeha is bored, since she is unable to read the majority of Falling Leaves and Sun Son's books; her magic is good, but not yet capable of providing translations to languages she can't even identify. Sometimes she contacts her mother or sister-in-law Summer Wind via a scrying spell, but she knows they are both busy. On other days the girl exercises her magic, just to keep in practice. She cannot dance in a floor length silk skirt, however. Otherwise, she primps.

It does improve a little bit once the girl starts routinely wearing the jewelry her brother made at all hours of the day, and after Amen, also slighted due to his tan complexion, begins slinging his lute across his back when they walk together. His instrument reminds the elite that the desert boy is marginally acceptable because of his phenomenal talent and Master Sun Son's patronage. Often they go to one of the Capitol City's many beautiful parks, and he plays for her until a crowd gathers.

Since it will be no proper trial of how she likes being married to a musician if Amen and Sun Son cease their round of concerts, appearances, and parties in the evenings, the two male flute players continue to rehearse in the afternoons. Mornings are devoted to exploring the city with the desert boy, while their host conducts lessons for his private students. The ornate architecture is lovely, and this is entirely enjoyable... almost... since, unfortunately, Syeha is snubbed for her dark skin.

Her first thought upon arrival through the portal is that she loves the feel of silk, for it is everywhere in the house; were it not so, Princess Falling Leaves of the Evening Gate would lose face. Then to actually wear it is a delight! Although Syeha does wish that the skirt was less long and confining. And Amen is here, which is the whole reason for coming, of course! Since they are not in public, she hugs him warmly, but doesn't try to kiss her boyfriend lest that become habit-forming.
