Living 1498-1546 CE, Meera Bai was a Hindu mystic poet, great devotee of Krishna, and has been claimed by the North Indian Hindu tradition of Bhakti saints. Born a Rajputi princess, she was married between 13 and 18, and widowed soon afterwards. Instead of electing to die with her husband or live retired thereafter, however, she embraced the growing Bhakti religious movement, identifying herself as the devoted wife of Krishna. While thousands of songs and poems (bhajans) have been attributed to her, she probably only wrote a few hundred, all stressing the joy and pain of a wife's absolute love for Lord Krishna. She also invented a new manner of singing these songs of worship, the raga. (continued) |
