Amen is self-taught on the two-reeded instrument, but long nights watching over sheep have honed his natural talent for music into great skill, and even longer decades spent inside a ring have given his performance a depth rarely heard from anyone. As for Moon Shadow, like the three other ladies from the plains, she cannot help becoming fond of Amen; there is much in his character to recommend itself. And yet, there is also no doubt that he is sincerely attached to Syeha already, and would be ecstatic if she returned those emotions. So far, she is, to all appearances, only her friendly and ebullient self, willing to be playful or serious depending on Amen's mood. Both women are enthralled on the occasions when he plays his double flute.

It is vitally important to Amen that he secure accommodations within this city, ever since he learned that Syeha plans to remain there to spend time with him. Furthermore, he now has incentive to become human again, whereas before it was only a half-formed wish. However, Syeha is mortal, and he can't stand the thought of her being a friend and only a friend, for her lifetime while he continues virtually unchanged. Yes, it is an enormous risk to take, yet he must do it. There is no other way.
