"Absolutely not!" the zephyr huffs. She considers telling the bounty hunter that it is none of her affair, but the purple fey sees no harm in gloating a bit, and at the same time punishing Ifrit for her insolence. "In fact, I have the other confined with no effort at all. The girl is in a bottle." Adult Ifrit does not suppress her flinch, as it is in character, and glares balefully, but offers no remark. "Prove it," dares Song optimistically. "I don't make idle boasts! Boy!" Zephyr snaps.

"Can you demonstrate that to my satisfaction?" Song the Wolf Calling demands cheekily. "It is consuming large quantities of my own power to keep her in check now. Although I'd be willing to include the charged fetters for a reasonable bonus." Ifrit stares deep into Zephyrs eyes and murmurs, "She got away from you, didn't she, Mother?" "I do not require your chains," says the purple female haughtily. "I can more than cope with this saucy child." "My sources suggest that she is correct..."

Zephyr and Song exchange ritual greetings, and then get down to business. "First," Wolf Calling says, "I want to be certain if I hand her over to you, that you can adequately restrain her. I have no desire for my prisoner to track me down and exact vengeance. If I didn't mind that, I'd have sold her to the pair of human women I saw on the way here. They did, after all, mention a significant incentive." "I assure you," retorts the purple woman, "I know best how to deal with my own daughter."

"Well, we're here now," says Song prosaically. "I can try to fool her into revealing whether the adolescent you remains with her, but if Zephyr is as canny as you say, it may not work." "What do you have in mind?" asks Ifrit. "Just make her angry, so she's less likely to think rationally," is the reply, accompanied by a wolfish grin. "My pleasure. That shouldn't be difficult at all," answers the true fey bounty hunter. "Here she comes; be sullen!" Song commands, lightly kicking her friend.

What she is on no account willing to do is come inside Zephyr's home. Any haggling must take place safely on the neutral territory of the desert floor. "I don't like this," whispers Ifrit to Song while they are still out of earshot of her mother. "I can't sense the girl, and at this close range I should be able to." "You'd know if she were... if anything had happened to her, though, right?" Wolf Calling reassures the blue djinn beside her. "Yes, but Mother may have stashed her somewhere."
