The holly and the ivy were the traditional Christmas greens in England for centuries. Hence, the carol "The Holly and the Ivy." Also Boxing Day, when the holly and the ivy make way for the greener box. (Really a very nice shrub that would hold up well for decorating drafty castles, manor houses and churches.)
