| Here another woman warrior for the gallery. Yes, woman, for she was baté (Crow term for people with a gender different to their assigned sex), a male at birth who is a woman. In the Crow nation, it was not only acceptable for one to be baté, but they were often regarded highly as being the bridge between the two genders. She held an esteemed position in the society and was the baté-leader in the Crow Nation. She was also a medicine woman, spiritual leader, artist and warrior, and she had amazing sewing-skills and so earned the right to make for Crow Chief Iron Bull a buffalo skin lodge. She fought alongside with another woman, The Other Magpie, at the battle of Rosebud in 1876. In this battle she wore the clothing of a man for if she would be killed she didn't want that the enemy thought she was a man hiding behind the clothes of a woman. She earned her name when she defended a wounded Crow warrior and killed a Lakota warrior The Other Magpie struck with her coup stick. (cont.) |
