She was born in June 17th, 1865, on the Omaha Reservation in Eastern Nebraska. She was the daughter from chief "Iron Eyes" Josheph LaFlesche, who was of Ponca and French Canadian acrestry, and his wife Mary Gale, who was the daughter of Army-surgeion Dr. John Gale and an Omaha-woman. She attended the boarding school at the reservation and then left for the Elizabeth Institute in New Yersey. After returning for a while into the reservation, she left again, this time to learn at the Hampton Institute in Virgina. After that she didn't return home as it was expected from a young girl to become a dutiful wife and mother, she attended the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Supported by anthropologist Alice Fletcher, she completed her medical studies in 2 (!) years and became in 1898 the first qualified Native American physician. After that she became the physician at the Omaha Agency Indian School. But this wasn't all she did. (Cont) |
