Brown Weasel Woman (Otaki) was born to the South Piegan (Blackfoot) in Southern Alberta Canada. As a child, she rather wanted to play with the boys instead of learning the duties of women and play with dolls. Against her mother's wishes, her father taught her how to hunt and fight. It is said that she asked her father First Rider to join a campain against the Crow. She joined the warriors and guarded the horses during the attack. Shortly after, she was allowed to join the buffalo hunt.
On one hunting expedition, they were attacked by Assiniboines, and her father's horse was shot. She turned, rode toward the enemy to where her father was stranded and pulled him onto her horse, saving his life. After this victory, she was celebrated and was allowed to sing the Victory Song, and a Scalp Dance was done to her honor. (cont) |
