You can tell how skilled an Alteyr Priory warrior is by just looking at them. They consider scars a badge of honor and tattoo their wins on their body. The small tattoos represent individual kills (i.e duels/one on one) and the large ones represent battles. A warriors weapon is passed down through generations and always has a name. Some warriors even have the ability to control an element. Riker's element is water.
