So here’s how I think a hypothetical jellyfish mermaid (who doesn’t look very jellyfish-like, but I felt lazy today XP), loosely based on the actual jellyfish life cycle (I encourage you all to look it up!). So mother mermaid takes her fragile infants and attaches their tails to a rock in a safe part of the sea floor. The tail grows upwards to enfold the little one like a sort of cocoon, keeping them safe from predators as mother periodically drops by with food and motherly affection. Most of the time, though, the infant stays tucked away inside, often days at a time. Occasionally, when the infant reemerges (assuming they are well fed) it will come to pass the the tail will bud another child using the same genetic material. Many children can fit inside a single polyp, but eventually they all grow too big and will break free, drifting out into open water, but lacking fins on their tail. These will grow during their adolescence before finally maturing as adults. |
