Their plan was simple; Tiger put the litella shackles back on, with a fair amount of gold wedged inside the lock so they wouldn't truly close, while Vedika let her eyes lose focus and pretended to be still hypnotized. Unluckily, the dregs of the Iretmose sorceress's magic hadn't quite been cleared from Vedika's system, so whenever she became motionless for too long, she was in danger of lapsing back into somnolence. Tiger had to call her name repeatedly before their captors did return for them.

Regardless of the reasons the Iretmoses had taken them, Tiger reflected that they seemed to be in no particular hurry to put them to that purpose. This was fortunate, because it took him a while to bring his Witch friend, or more than friend, back to consciousness. Then it required more time to settle Vedika down, since the Snake-Eyed compulsion spell had merely forced her cooperation without numbing her senses. The young Witch had spent weeks trapped inside her own mind, struggling to get out.

The young Oakenling had to warn Vedika not to handle the gold when it was too hot, and instruct her to turn the key gingerly since it was such a soft metal and he feared it might bend. Nevertheless, sooner than he expected, Tiger's hands were free, and he was able to perform his own rune magic again. Using it on the door to the treasure room did no good, but that didn't disappoint him excessively. What he truly desired was to awaken Vedika. Together, they could surprise whomever came for them.

...and not terribly independently, however it was better than nothing. "Do you remember seeing the shape of the key?" he asked her. "Yes," she replied, not offering further information. That was okay, though. "Can you make a piece of gold melt into that exact shape with your magic?" Tiger inquired, praying his ruse proved effective. "Yes," she said again. "Do that for me, and then use the golden key to open the lock," Tiger told her. Once she had clear orders to follow, Vedika worked quickly.

He had no clue what to do anymore. For an indeterminate time he just sat with his head in his hands, staring absently at his magic-nulling litella shackles. Then it came to him. It was a crazy idea, but the Oakenling boy didn't have anything to lose by trying. "Vedika," he directed the catatonic Witch, "take these manacles off of me." She came forward and examined the bonds. After an agonizingly long pause she said, "I don't have the key." This was progress! Vedika was thinking... sluggishly...
