Mark glanced away for an instant, his focus on something painful. Then he returned to Marea. "What you don't know is what my mother named me. The name she gave me is Rrim," he said, rolling the double r. No part of him was touching her, and for a moment Marea considered that odd... until it occurred to her that perhaps he was afraid to, that for Mark, he was existing in limbo... at least, before she answered him. She sighed. "I suppose now you'd like me to tell you my name is Eyava... Baby?"

"You don't sound very alarmed," he commented softly. "You didn't look very alarmed to warrant it," she said, virtually clearly. "Baby, I wouldn't disturb you if it wasn't important," Mark began, not regretting his choice, exactly, but maybe questioning the appropriateness of his timing. "Yah," Marea remarked again, perfectly distinctly now, "so... whatsit?" He blew out a big breath. "I used to be Miles, the Paladin of Ayre, but you know that." "Okay..." the Witch said, propped up on her elbow.

The crazier things became around her, the calmer Marea would seem, partly for the benefit of her team, but mostly because the young Witch was just like that. And Mark was intensely proud of her. Putting down his whetstone, he came to a decision. The rebel Yeled got up and went to sit quietly next to Marea as she slept, waiting to see how long it would be before his steady gaze woke her. It took less time than Mark had anticipated, considering her caffeine addiction. "Yah, whatsit?" she murmured.

They were gaining on the Iretmoses, closing in on them both in time and distance, and concurrently the Snake-Eyed were almost to their destination. Mark could sense it, and he wasn't the only one among the team members to feel that way. Draensil was getting a tad snappish from the tension, and Karako's ears swiveled constantly for stray sounds. Oddly enough, Marea had relaxed somewhat, as if she was looking forward to a fight. Her boyfriend knew better, of course; she was the eye of the storm.

Robin and Mark took turns driving, so the team could follow the trail late into the night. The renegade Yeled had the fortunate talent of being able to sleep nearly anywhere or anytime, so he took it upon himself to act as guard for the first part of the watch, while Elora, silently acknowledging the wisdom of this precaution, told him, "You know, old people tend to wake up early... very early. Don't worry about the details. I'll take care of it." Mark spent the wee hours sharpening his sword.
