After all, one mortal should look much like another to an Outer God... if, indeed, that was the explanation for Meryamaat's open eyes. It was one thing to receive dreams and portents, carefully filtered through the mental matrix of eternal Meryamaat, from Apophis... the High Priest had been accustomed to that, before the long hibernation, before the visions had ceased... and quite another to live beneath his direct supervision. It was a departure from the norm, and made Isfathotep afr... uneasy.

...as he understood her condition, the mind of Meryamaat had been transformed beyond thinking in the normal fashion of beings with self-volition... but then... Again the High Priest's thoughts shied away from naming that which might be using Meryamaat's eyes, even though she continued to stare straight ahead, unblinking, alone in her tomb. But using a semi-mortal tool like Meryamaat, even... Isfathotep shuddered... even a god's gaze might be shifted to another in one's stead... say Ankesnaapep?

Still, a means of dealing with this sensation of constant scrutiny must be found lest he become as frazzled as Ankesnaapep... or as Ankesnaapep chose to appear. The High Priest was already somewhat weary from having relocated the agents of Kemat... all for some boy she insisted on taking captive along with the Witch. Kemat was no fool, though. She had not shared her reasons for doing so, but no doubt the Archmage had them. Idly, Isfathotep wondered if he could shift the gaze... of Meryamaat?...

It would be a mistake to dismiss her as listless and no longer dangerous, however. Since Meryamaat had committed herself to her living death when Ankesnaapep was only a very small child, the woman had never had much filial piety, and she was coldblooded enough to sacrifice her mother again to serve her needs... her mother, and anyone else who got in her way. Therefore Isfathotep was a cautious man. The desire for power would not blind him as it had done others before. HIS empire would not fall!

Nevertheless... Meryamaat had opened her eyes, and she had been a seer and a receiver of visions during her lifetime. He couldn't quite discount the possibility that... No, he wouldn't complete that thought even in the privacy of his own mind. Ankesnaapep, the daughter of eternal Meryamaat, and leader of the opposition faction against himself and Kemat the Archmage, seemed to be the most effected. The woman was showing visible signs of strain, the cracked lips and gnawed on nails, the dull eyes.
