...and all of that, in addition to driving on roads that did NOT go decently straight, had delayed Tashmitum's mission. By giving any electronics on the large boat a wide berth, the Snake-Eyed and their prizes had managed to withstand the maddening effects of the rampant technology. Yet, their new destination, the Witch reputed to have litella, was another island, in Greece. They would have to either cross Europe lengthwise, remain at sea, or appeal to Kemat the Archmage for magical assistance.

None of that was even remotely true, of course. Not only did the Snake-Eyed not plan on returning the horses, instead simply abandoning them in Oslo, the Iretmoses made a practice of whipping creatures that fought against their wishes, from oxen to their own people of lower status, so the kind farmer's pair would not be treated well. They would live through the experience, though, and perhaps learn to trust again someday. Toth had difficulty, also, in adjusting to this arrangement of reins...

Kemat's acolyte had no conception of how lucky she had been when she'd accosted a stranger on the street, and 'requested' compellingly where she could find the nearest horses. Firstly, the woman actually knew; secondly, there was a breeder of Friesians outside of Malmo; and thirdly, he'd accustomed his animals to draft work. Otherwise, no amount of fogging the man's mind and forcing him to believe these buyers wished to have their own Veterinarian examine them for a few days, would have helped.

There was simply no way for an Iretmose to work magic under such conditions, or even endure that torture for more than a few minutes. So they had resorted to the simpler and more familiar horse drawn cart on their journey north. The Snake-Eyed do not like horses, and the feeling is mutual, yet the beasts are manageable if sufficient care is taken. That became Toth's task, while Tashmitum kept both of the two prisoners in a light doze, lying flat and unobtrusively in the back of the wagon.

Toth and Tashmitum had initially attempted to commandeer one of the vehicles by taking control of the mind of the operator. In doing this, they were making a great sacrifice for the cause, for the "cars" were not merely cacophonous and ludicrously abrupt in their speed and maneuvers, they stank abominably. The true barrier to riding in one of these mechanical obscenities, however, was the mental disorientation and sense of indescribable psychic "itching" that the electrical systems produced.
