Whoever was able to reach the strangely transformed and comatose mind of Meryamaat first, successfully, would become the new ruler of the Snake-Eyed. The information contained within her was literally the codex of all they had ever been, and all they hoped to be again. Not to mention the reestablishment of the visions for which Meryamaat was the conduit, and without which the High Priest was essentially nothing but an impotent figurehead; that was certainly a nice side benefit for them both.

She was not staking her mind and sanity on a potential link with eternal Meryamaat, which might go wrong in a plethora of ways. That was what the priesthood trained for, though, so perhaps the prospect was less daunting for Isfathotep. He was certainly desperate enough to enter into a race for power, for leadership over the last vestige of the Iretmose people, for eventual influence in the glorious civilization that they would reinstate. It was a race, indeed. Access to Meryamaat was the key.

Only the three of them (herself, Tashmitum, and Toth) had illicitly slunk out of their massive underground hibernation chamber in order to obtain the Witch girl, Vedika. Any exposure to the mundane world before the appointed time was strictly forbidden. At the moment, it seemed that Kemat the Archmage was taking all the risks in her alliance with the High Priest Isfathotep. His turn would come, however. It was not Kemat who would attempt to perform a ritual using an untested Witch creature...
