This was crucial to the long range vision of the Snake-Eyed; their ultimate goal was to essentially destroy the earth as it was, and rebuild it in the image dictated to them by their mad god, Apophis of the Outer Gods. At the present they lacked the sheer force to do so, and their very survival as a people was at stake. The High Priest Isfathotep, joined by Kemat the Archmage, was gambling his future on the viability of the mind of the Witch girl. Toth realized his life was also at risk here.

Currently the boy was drugged into submission. Tashmitum was not completely overconfident about her abilities, and had foreseen the possible need for anesthetic chemicals. The girl was reputedly unusual, after all, or she could not be of use to the Snake-Eyed, in particular Isfathotep the High Priest. His plan was to use the Witch's mental powers as a conduit from his mind to that of Meryamaat, the undead but non-living seer who had become a storage unit for the pattern of Iretmose civilization.

Now they required bonds of litella to quell the boy's magic, because the girl's mind was almost too strong for Tashmitum; she was struggling to keep the Witch in an obedient trance state while also maintaining her own shield and disguise spells. That left Toth to subdue and carry the boy creature all alone, and stay hidden as well. Kemat the Archmage did not feel that hitting the Oakenling over the head repeatedly so that he was perpetually unconscious, or too damaged to squirm, was a good idea.

Privately he wondered what made this Witch's mind so special, however that had not been disclosed to Toth. He was there to deal with contingencies that might arise. And indeed, something unexpected had occurred. The girl was travelling with some kind of woodland boy, who was neither a fae nor a human. Tashmitum had told him simply to kill the boy, but the Archmage Kemat had overridden that order. Apparently she wished to examine this thing called an "Oakenling" further. Toth did not envy him.
