Continuing my #Mulan 2 retelling: Later, long after Fa Mulan and Yu Lien had retired to their pavilion-like tent for the evening, Prince Rouran and General Li Shang ran into each other while "casually strolling" around its perimeter. "I didn't see you this afternoon during the Princess's danger," the Mongol prince stated with an edge to his tone. "I... regret that I... was not myself at that time," Shang replied cautiously. "Still, I will do everything in my power to protect her." Rouran nodded and stroked his beard. "Her Highness informs me that her blade possesses strong magic. It would be rude to doubt her, and I do not believe she is foolish enough to rely on it if that is not, in fact, true." "Sometimes Mulan's... I mean the princess's... actions seem odd, but she is never a fool," the Chinese general confirmed. "Ah, then you know something of this sword's enchantment?" Acting on impulse, Li Shang told him, "I've had first hand experience of it, yes. Repeatedly." (cont.)

Rouran was silent for a moment, weighing what he'd learned. Then, slowly and deliberately, he said, "As long as she remains my betrothed bride, Princess Mulan's safety is paramount. She carries my honor," and he paused, a look of awareness passing between the men, acknowledging that both knew she carried more than that for Shang. "I, too, will do everything within my capability to defend her." General Li nodded. "Then we are agreed," he asserted. "Yes, we are agreed," the Mongol replied.

(cont.) "And do you judge it to be a match for a witch of great power, for the peril will only grow stronger as we near my home territory?" asked Prince Rouran intently. "I can't say for certain, since I don't know your witch, but the sword shouldn't be underestimated. It is ancient, it is mighty, and it is... canny." Li Shang considered revealing that Yu Lien had her own magic, as well, but since the sword spirit was currently disguised as human, he respected her right to share that, or not.
