When the potion was finished, the Witch took the sticky paste it dried into, and once again approached the white ghost wolf. "I'm sorry that I wasn't thorough last time," she apologized. "Hopefully, this should cure everything," and as Brin crumbled the paste between her fingers under the wolf's chin, it began to harden into the shape of an elongated quarrel protruding from just above her chest. Then she summoned water, and the mix of the two powders from before dissolved and blew away like fog.

As soon as she could wrap a towel around her wet hair, Brin began heating water again. "Now, I'm brewing something," she smiled happily. "Your wife was shot in the throat. Symbolically, I think that's very important, probably why she's mute, possibly why Jess can't transform. You can't speak if you have a crossbow bolt in the throat. So we have to fix that. But I'm out of powder, and I have to start fresh. It's a good thing that I brought my harder-to-find ingredients with me," Brin explained.

Again and again and again, because the Candeliana Witch had a great deal of hair. Somewhere in the middle of the last rinse, when even the hot water was only lukewarm, she exclaimed, "Of course! I'm an idiot!" Curls dripping into her face, she looked up at Hawkeye, triumphant. "No, you're not," he repeated.

Hawkeye had thought that Brin would want privacy for this activity, but as she considered it herself, she gave him a saucy grin and said, "Do you want to come, too? Sometimes it gets difficult in the wilderness when you've got a lot of pot handles and soap in your eyes." "Are you serious?" the Oakenling asked. "Don't worry," the Witch told him, "All I plan to do is wash my hair and not think about anything for a little while." She laughed. "I'm mostly harmless." "No, you're not," he praised her.
