"Guys, it's a trap!" Marea screamed at the top of her lungs. And with that, the tower door crashed shut behind her, fortunately leaving her staff intact on the outside. But what about Gran?

Then, unbidden, Marea's attention flashed back to the puzzle of the woman with the bucket. There had been no alarm, so that couldn't have been her purpose. What was in the bucket that was of vital importance? And if it was all that critical, why station the Yaldah here instead of on the main level of the castle? Unless... the young Witch was strongly reminded of her mother's potions... but it couldn't have been anything powerful enough to eat through metal, or the bucket would have leaked...

Wedging her staff in the doorway, just to ensure that it stayed open, Marea cautiously sat and waited. Straining her ears, she seemed to be able to hear two women's voices, originating from much farther away than was possible in the castle tower, and talking calmly rather than raised so that she couldn't discern the words. They've got a dampening field of some sort set up, the young Witch thought. That'll be Gran's doing, trying to keep me safe. What on Earth are they discussing, though?

The Yaldah scrambled upright and walked over to the arrow slit, clearly stalling. "That's no kind of choice; I'll die either way," she said. "Nonsense," Marea retorted. "The wall is right under the tower here, and plenty high. That's no more than three stories down. You'll break a lot of bones, but you won't die unless you're very unlucky. Now go!" Squirming and wriggling in places to fit through, the woman went. One of the other two bodyguards groaned. The Witch kicked her in the head.
