It was just bad luck that a yawning Yeled appeared right then, in search of caffeine, and discovered a raid underway instead. He backpedaled swiftly and managed to shout before Tylyr's knife slid between his ribs. Immediately the attackers scattered, Robin and the Ghillie Dhu heading for what they hoped was the barracks, Marea and her grandmother up the nearest stairs having by mute consensus bet on the tower, and Mark and the Maenad each to one end of the dining hall to take up position there.

"Close it," Ynarra instructed tersely. "We won't be leaving here at a run, not after a Witches' duel, and it will look more normal for now." Finding the main hall wasn't particularly challenging, considering the number of fortresses the six of them had seen in their combined lifetimes. Four Yelaadim were there, eating a late supper. Belandvyn shot them before they had time to raise an alarm. "The Traitor will be wherever she feels safest: either the dungeon or the highest tower," Gran said.

The implied threat was enough for the hapless Yeled, who resolved to pass the situation on to his superior, and cracked open the gate to allow the Damians into the courtyard. As Ynarra's "troops" filed past, Mark reached out, quick as a snake, snared the man by the neck and snapped it; he then pirouetted to the other guard, slammed his head against the stone sharply, stole his keys, and locked both men inside the gate room. "Do you want the gate left open a slit behind us, or closed?" he asked.

"Who are you, and what business do you have with her?" countered the Yeled on gate duty. Perhaps he felt that to deny the presence of any Witch would annoy the bloodborn and still not accomplish anything; he would have been right, of course. "I am Sar Morgenstern," Ynarra replied, giving the surname of Brin's father, "and our business is our own. Open the gate and produce the Witch. Immediately, before my patience grows thin. Please." The last word virtually had icicles dripping from it.

The small party managed to march more or less in formation up to the castle gate, Ynarra and Robin in the lead, and Marea and Tylyr bringing up the rear. Mark and Belandvyn had wanted to be able to move forward or drop back swiftly, as needed, but at least that far, it hadn't been required. Gran hadn't shared exactly what she planned to say to the guards to persuade them to admit the invaders, so it was a mild shock when she merely announced, "We're here for the Witch," in a masculine voice.
