"Improvised," said the Oakenling, smiling. The next moment, he was aiming the crossbow he'd appropriated at the Damian who'd been trapped beneath the train. As he'd just appeared from around the screening evergreens at the last bend, the bloodborn was barely within range; Hawkeye's quarrel hit him center chest. "Well, that's marked our position," the Oakenling sighed. "They'll smell the blood and come running." "Maybe not," Brin mused, awkwardly feeling in her pouch while grasping the rope.

"There's nothing to be sorry about," Hawkeye reassured her. "Besides, I've found what I was looking for." "And that is?" the Witch asked, tired. "A way down. See? There's a series of narrow ledges in the wall of the ravine, about ten or fifteen meters apart..." the Oakenling told her, wrapping the line around a nearby tree, and throwing the rest over the edge. "What would you have done," Brin queried mildly, beginning to repel to the first landing, "if there hadn't been a convenient chasm?"

The Oakenling reattached the rope to the base of the fir before joining the Witch concealed among the boughs. All this activity had lasted only a few minutes, and soon another pair of soldiers appeared on the scene. Seeing the cord already spanning the gap, they lost no time in crossing over, hurrying to catch up to the two in the lead and offer reinforcements. Now, Hawkeye flew across himself, pulled the anchoring crossbow bolt out of the trunk, and returned to the gully's near edge with it.
