The Oakenling allowed the soldiers to construct a hasty rope bridge by shooting a crossbow bolt with a cord attached into a tree on the opposite side, and securing the near end to the trunk of the fir next to the one he and Brin happened to be hidden in. When one bloodborn had gone hand over hand about a third of the way across, however, he struck, diving in eagle shape to claw at the eyes of the man standing on the brink. Changing in midair, Hawkeye landed with his boots in the Damian's face.

Turning into an eagle, he fluttered to the branch above her, and resumed his Oakenling form to help her climb. This ruse wouldn't have worked had the ground near the gully's edge been anything but bare stone, as the added weight would have indented his tracks too much, but the loam stopped at the tree line on both sides of the divide. It wasn't long before the first pair of Damians arrived. Just as Hawkeye had hoped, they assumed that the couple had somehow managed to span the yawning gulf.

"That's not what I had in mind. Yet, still, call for her," he insisted, giving the High Mistress a lopsided grin. "We only have to outsmart them until dawn." Then, sheathing his sword, the Oakenling reached out and lifted the Witch into his arms, staff and all. "What...?" she began, but thought better of it. The man closed his golden eyes in concentration and began backing up, setting his feet exactly in their original prints. Soon he'd gone far enough to boost Brin onto a convenient limb.

Therefore, they ran, weaving in and out among the tall conifers. There was virtually no undergrowth to impede them and the terrain was downhill, but still, Brin had a stitch forming in her side by the time they came to a sudden, deep ravine. It would pose no problem for the Oakenling, who could transform and fly across, but it was too steep and broad for the Witch. Surveying the gap, Hawkeye said urgently, "Summon your griffin!" "I don't know where she is right now. It could take hours..."

They weren't wrong. Hardly had they reached the edge of the thick firs when a couple of quarrels embedded themselves into the bark of the trunks Hawkeye and Brin had immediately put between themselves and the Damians, before pausing momentarily to switch weapons again. Catching the staff the Oakenling tossed to her, the Candeliana Witch panted, "They're bloodborn. I won't be able to outrun them. Any ideas?" Bending to pick up his sword, her companion replied, "Maybe. For now, run anyway."
