The Traitor almost laughed. It was so... traditional... the poisoned apple. Yet, in this case, it was practical, as well. Apple seeds contained cyanide, therefore the apple dipped in cyanide set off no alarms, and was approved for Jaenell's meal. Indeed, the key was all in the dosage.
Istharé was summoned as soon as her aunt's lifeless body was discovered. There were many apologies offered, of course, but really, even had another High Mistress been in the same room with her when Jaenell ate the tainted fruit, there was little that could have been done. Potassium cyanide simply killed too quickly.
Surveying the scene, Istharé felt oddly detached. Clearly, her aunt had been working with a black mirror when she stopped for a snack; flecks of blood from where the convulsing woman had bitten her tongue stained its surface. Had Jaenelle had the time and the will, she wondered... |
