Isthare knew her aunt had heard from Vedika about the man with the golden eyes, and had selfishly tried to capture him alone. If he were a sole surviving Alu Sage, he would be a rich prize indeed. Jaenell's silence on this point would seem to indicate that she believed she might have another chance at that prize if only she kept her mouth shut and prevented others from getting there first. How could she think that, unless she were, or were in league with, the Traitor, and expected release?

Assuming that she'd survived, her magic would be depleted, she'd be exhausted, but Brin had a daughter of near Isthare's age who would undoubtedly have equipped her family with cell phones. The young Dark Sister had to believe that Brin still lived; if not, her personal conclusion, which seemed certain, was that the Traitor had found and killed her, whether that murderer was Jaenell herself or someone else who'd evaded her aunt's notice. And she still needed Brin for additional information.

And that was it, the official explanation: High Mistress Brin had sacrificed herself in order to secure time for the Oakenling to escape. He was now untraceable. What Ankanas would eventually tell High Mistress Brin's relatives was unlikely to resemble that statement in any way, and would undoubtedly take quite a while to draft. In the meantime, thought Isthare with hope in her heart, I have a cell phone to hack. Brin would at the least have texted her mother and daughter to reassure them.

You could at least have been fair and impartial, Isthare thought, even if you had no love for my side of the family. She sighed aloud. The younger Dark Sister felt that she ought to be triumphant, or satisfied, or have some emotional reaction, other than being distraught about Brin's death. Yet, it just wasn't there. Jaenell, of course, was silent. Isthare continued, "Did you at least have the wit to secure her body and personal effects?" "No, the Oakenling male escaped with everything."

"Would you care to explain your reasoning for ignoring proper regulations, High Mistress Jaenell?" Isthare purred. There was nothing the woman could say. Her career, barring miraculous intervention, was ruined. And Jaenell herself had taught a younger Isthare not to believe in miracles. She'd been a strict teacher, harsh on her pupils, but not generally brutal... except to Isthare, who was, coincidentally, her niece. It would be disastrous to seem to be favoring the girl, was her excuse.
