Catherine of Aragon (December 1485 – January 1536) was Queen of England from June 1509 until May 1533 as the first wife of King Henry VIII; she was previously Princess of Wales as the wife of Henry's elder brother Arthur, but he died 5 months after their wedding.
Henry was said to be very much in love with her, remaining so for many years. Unfortunately, he was also desperate for a male heir. Catherine, daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, saw no reason why her daughter Mary should not ascend the throne in her own right, as a Spanish princess would have, and refused to consent to her marriage to Henry being annulled, as that would make Mary illegitimate.
By 1525, Henry VIII was infatuated with Anne Boleyn, and when the Pope also failed to grant an annulment, he declared a schism with the Catholic Church and married Anne anyway, declaring his divorce from Catherine. She remained tremendously popular with the people of England until her death. |
