| Fluorine is a chemical element with symbol F and atomic number 9, in the halogen family. Fluorine is a yellow gas when produced at room temperature, but this is never found spontaneously occurring due to fluorine's extreme, often explosive, reactivity with almost all other elements, including some of the noble gasses. Fluorite, the primary mineral source of fluorine which gave the element its name, was first described in 1529, however, the pure element was not isolated until 1886 by French chemist Henri Moissan. Of its combined mineral compounds, fluorite, fluorapatite and cryolite are the most industrially significant and commonly found. Cryolite is a rare, pure white crystal, whereas fluorite can be found in a range of colors, ranging from "watermelon" to the more usual green and purple striated stone, occasionally with bands of blue. This is a particularly fine example. |
