The young Cleric lets it be known that he feels uncomfortable living under the same roof with Catleya under the circumstances, and promptly moves into the guest quarters of the Temple. On the other hand, Cat tells no one that she has taken up sleeping in Madame du Leethe's secret room, because she wants to ensure that anyone searching the house during daylight hours will be absolutely unable to find her. After all, it is imperative that the attempt on her life be conducted in a public venue.

Various accusations and recriminations are hurled back and forth until finally, with eerie calm and deliberation, Velen asks, "You never truly wanted to be in this relationship at all, did you Catleya?" They have chosen the steps outside the main Temple of Nocturnia for their quarrel. Catleya complains that Velen is spending too much time on his religious mentor's research, and doesn't pay enough attention to her. Since the young Cleric has actually worked only fitfully at this task, about which he feels guilty, it isn't difficult for him to simulate an air of righteous indignation. Although they never raise their voices, their auras glow brightly and attract people's surreptitious notice.
