| Psyche was a beautiful Greek maiden, who eventually became the wife of Eros (in Roman, Cupid) and Goddess of the Soul. She is legendary for breaking her vow to Eros never to look at him, after which he left her. It is less well known that, in addition to having lit a lamp, Psyche had also been convinced that her husband was a monster and would kill her, and therefore planned to knife him, despite having fallen in love with her spouse. She searched everywhere for him with her lamp, overcoming various trials and proving her love to Eros, who then saved her life and asked Zeus to make her immortal. The couple existed more or less happily ever after, a rare thing in Greek mythology. |
