| In ancient Greek mythology, Amphitrite was a sea goddess and wife of Poseidon. Amphitrite was a daughter of Nereus and Doris, and thus a Nereid, one of 50 sea nymphs attendant upon Poseidon who went barefoot and carried his trident. Amphitrite was distinguished among her sisters only by her queenly bearing and adornments, and her place as Poseidon's consort. It is suggested that she played a more major role to early Greek seafarers, loosing some of her importance in later times. In other words, she was originally considered to be a goddess, but then reclassified as only a nymph. |
