| Since there are already traditional British/Welsh fairies depicted in the movie "The Black Cauldron", I wanted to make Eilonwy something completely different. I was thinking of her attachment to her glowing golden bauble, and it occurred to me to make her a jinni (genie), or, more properly, a jiniri as I learned that female jinn are termed. Jinn are sentient magical creatures of Arabian folklore made from smokeless "scorching fire" who possess free will and thus may be good, evil, or neutrally benign. They can be imprisoned, generally in gems, lamps, or bottles, and made to serve humans. |
