It is during that same dinner that Captain Southern Cross announces, essentially, that the point of where the teens will stay during combat is moot. They have received word through Uncle Anduin's magical communications network that the rulers of the Island Archipelago have a job for them which supersedes that of pirate hunting. The Firebrand is to proceed to the Central Kingdom Capitol City in order to pick up two passengers, an Ambassador and her companion, and return with them to the islands.

"Don't cut me again if you can at all prevent it," he tells her, and smiles wryly. Maia tosses her hair playfully. "Keep out of my galley, then," the girl retorts. "You're very confident," says Makto. "I know," she states, and returns below decks to finish the evening meal. Despite the less than calm ocean, it turns out that Rod's niece hasn't been bragging. She's an excellent cook, and the galley becomes her territory. "But elsewhere," the bosun reminds her, "everyone outranks you. Everyone."

As they leave the captain's cabin, Maia bumps into Makto; the waves are still rough. He hisses softly, as her elbows has brushed his scratched abdomen. "I'm sorry," she says, contrite. "It was purely an accident." "I know," replies the southern lad. "It's all ri... actually, it's not all right. It stings."

Maia looks smug, and presses her luck. "I shouldn't have to stay cooped up there during a battle if he doesn't," she states, trying for a logical tone. "I see," says Captain Cross. "Can you fight?" "Well, no..." the girl admits. "Stay below!" remains her order. Now Makto's face is smug. "Can you fight?" the captain instantly challenges him. "Yes, actually. I learned in my sleep, but our witch-woman helped us remember." "How nice for you," Southern Cross remarks blandly. "Stay aloft!"

"Yes, sir," they say, in perfect unison now that the quarrel has been interrupted. "I'd be surprised if they didn't hear you shouting at each other from the mainland!" he chastises the culprits. "She told me to keep out of her galley!" Makto protests. The captain glares at him, but addresses Maia, "It's not your galley, young... lady. It's mine!" She hangs her head. "If you can prove that your cooking is better than our current fare, then you can banish Makto from the galley," he grants.
