Maia fumes, but cannot gainsay that. She gives Makto a venomous look that deep inside she knows he hasn't earned, however he is a convenient target for her ire. The southern boy waits until the next day to try to pacify her. She is once more chopping tubers, and, apparently, doing some much more elaborate cooking, for there are ingredients everywhere. Unfortunately the waves happen to be rough, and Makto reaches out to catch himself, knocking everything to the decking. "Oaf," Maia snarls.

Immediately, the island girl fiercely protests the inequality of this. She has heard from the crew that Makto got to stay aloft during their prior engagement. Moreover, Shooting Star was not much older than Maia when she began her career. "Go below and stay there, indeed! I will not!" she refuses adamantly. "Yes, you will, and at the first sign of danger, or you won't remain on this ship. These are the captain's orders, and no one on the Firebrand disobeys him," her uncle tells her flatly.

Just then the scruffy bosun steps up to speak with them, particularly Maia. "Good, you're friends already," he says, grinning. "I want to emphasize one rule. This is a privateer; we'll eventually be seeing battle. That's no place for a young girl, regardless of what Makto may have been telling you. Most fights are not as... benign... as our last one. We were lucky and got off without any serious injuries and very little damage. You can't count on that. Maia will go below and stay there!"

"Yes, I know who you are," she answers. "They call you the Ship's Boy. So, I am Maia, and I will be the Ship's Girl." "I don't think there is such a thing," Makto makes the mistake of saying. The island girl scowls a little. "There is now," she replies. This is not a beginning that bodes well, but Irayo's son doesn't give up easily. "I'm sorry to hear about the fire, but I think you'll really like it aboard the Firebrand. I do!" Rod's niece decides to call a truce. "I'm sure I will."

Makto thinks it is unfair that Maia is given a tour of the ship without having to work for it, but she has just lost half of her house, and she does wind up in the galley chopping tubers, so there are mitigating circumstances. As soon as she is freed from her tasks for the day, however, the girl begins climbing all over the Firebrand. "Like a monkey," the southern boy thinks, somewhat jealous of the ease with which everything just comes to her. But he smiles and introduces himself politely.
