On the way, they spy a true pirate, and detour to attack and cripple it, leaving it for the expanded navy to take into custody. Makto, being a guest but almost adult, is allowed to watch from the crow's nest high up on the mast. Honestly, it isn't much of a fight, the outlaw ship being significantly smaller and more slipshod than the Firebrand, but the southern lad is happy to have seen some excitement, at least.

She is to sleep in the quarters of the few women who sail on board the Firebrand, in the other small room on deck. Since she is also a teen, it is assumed that she and Makto will entertain each other when not doing useful work. Being an island girl, ships will not be completely alien to her, but there still remains much prejudice in the Island Archipelago against females putting to sea. Therefore, Maia won't have to be taught the difference between stem and stern, yet must learn a great deal.
