"Back home there was a boy who loved me, or thought he did, and he knew I was with Amen, but it didn't change the way Makto cared about me. I felt so badly for him!" At this point, Estel interrupts. "Makto... why does that name sound so familiar?" She thinks for a moment, then asks, "Is the name of his mother Nitram, by any chance?" "Yes," Syeha confirms, though she's mystified by this digression. "They came to Bowing Tree Village escaping from a slaver raiding party when Makto was small."

"Yes, I know," Syeha replies, with the ghost of a smile, now. "I realize that in real life I would have my own activities to keep me entertained, or at least busy, and I'm also aware that Sun Son is pushing Amen to venture beyond what he previously thought were his limits, and that normally there would be less rehearsal time. However, understanding facts with your mind rarely changes how the heart feels." Estel whistles. "Now there's an understatement!" but she's still an attentive listener.

"So, are you joyful being with Amen, then, or are you having second thoughts," Estel inquires at last. "It can be a very tumultuous age." "Oh no, when I'm with him, I'm incredibly happy, or when it seems as if he's playing just for me alone..." Syeha trails off. "I'm so glad you've come! Doing absolutely nothing while the menfolk rehearse is simply awful!" "My goodness, girl, don't they have more comprehension, much less compassion, than to do that? No wonder you're grateful I've come!"

The two don't go into what's really bothering Syeha right away, though. Or, rather, they touch on part of it; they both feel hobbled in long silk skirts, they're both looked askance at surreptitiously for their coloration and foreignness, and they both find these things deplorable. Estel talks about her adventures as the pirate Shooting Star. Syeha discusses village life, and her intermittent magic. Each of them muses about how romance found them, and the ones they love, perfectly imperfect.

And, since she's a kind person and has nothing pressing that requires immediate attention, Ambassador Shooting Star arrives on the doorstep. "Syeha is unhappy here, but if I ask her the reason, she might try to spare my feelings and not tell the whole truth. Maybe just having someone to talk to in the afternoons will raise her spirits," Amen says, entrusting the rest to the former pirate's capable hands. Syeha and Shooting Star, "Please, call me Estel," are thrilled to finally meet in person.
