In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at President Bill Clinton's inauguration, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at President John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961. With the publication of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", Angelou publicly discussed aspects of her personal life. She was respected as a spokesperson for black people and women, and her works have been considered an example and defense of Black culture.

She was an actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. In 1982, she earned the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was active in the Civil Rights movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s, she made around 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties, never losing her mental acuity.

The first, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim. She became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, sex worker, nightclub dancer and performer (where she picked up her pen name), cast member of the opera "Porgy and Bess", coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa.

Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 â May 28, 2014) was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences.

Most of her waka are about anxiety, solitude or passionate love. She is the only female poet referred to in the kana preface of the Kokinshu anthology, which describes her style as "containing naivety in old style but also delicacy". The many legends about her have made her the best-known of the Rokkasen in modern times. She and her contemporary Ariwara no Narihira are considered archetypes of female and male beauty, and both feature heavily in later literary works, particularly Noh plays.

Almost nothing of Komachi's life is known for certain, save for the names of various men with whom she engaged in romantic affairs and whose poetry exchanges with her are preserved in the Kokin Wakashu. Stories abound of Komachi in love. Another group of legends concern her cruel treatment of her lovers, while a third type tells of an aged Komachi, forced to wander in ragged clothes, her beauty faded and her appearance so wretched that she is mocked by all around her, though this may fictional.

Ono no Komachi (~ 825âc. 900), was a Japanese waka poet, one of the Rokkasenâthe Six best Waka poets of the early Heian period. She was renowned for her unusual beauty, and Komachi is today a synonym for feminine beauty in Japan. She also counts among the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals. Extensive study has gone into trying to ascertain her place of birth, and family, but without conclusive results. She may have been a low-ranking consort or lady-in-waiting of an emperor (or two, legend suggests.)

She was the first known woman to hold the title of EN, a role of great political importance that was often held by royal daughters. She was so by her father, King Sargon of Akkad. Enheduanna was made High Priestess in a shrewd political move by Sargon to help secure power in the Sumerian south where the City of Ur was located. An alabaster disc bearing her name and likeness was excavated at Ur, which was Enheduanna's main residence. It shows her in a fringed wrap dress, a headdress, and a shawl.
